Introduction

According to statistics, Spotify is the biggest streaming service in the world based on the number of users with 165 million users, and it wants to stay that way. As of the time of writing this, it currently has a partial lyrics feature in collaboration with Genius, which shows some lyrics and background information about the song being played. But even that is available for only a handful of songs.

The goal for this initiative is to build on the current framework and proffer solutions that would see the lyrics feature develop into something that users would love while adding the ability to move karaoke from bars to the mobile phones of users.

The Challenge

Conceptualize and design a new feature for Spotify that will help improve user retention by engaging users with lyrics and a sing-along feature.

The Solution

A much sought, carefully designed lyrics feature to help users follow along while listening to music and an accompanying, optional karaoke feature to recreate the karaoke feel on a mobile phone.

COMPETITIVE ANALYSIS

Lyrics and Karaoke

I ran a quick survey on the music streaming market to see where Spotify stands amongst it's competitors based on the availability of a lyrics and karaoke feature.

Major competitors in the music streaming industry like Apple music, Deezer, and YouTube music all have lyrics built in to their applications.

Opportunity

Spotify is at a disadvantage because it doesn't have a lyrics or karaoke feature, which all other services compared with it have. Yet, according to statistics, Spotify has the most amount of users, this could be due to the simple and youthful vibe the app has. With the introduction of these features, the number of Spotify users could see a rise because users can find all features in one place.
